Upcoming post-pandemic holidays: tourism tries to emerge from the crisis
Lockdown periods, new social distancing rules and many other pandemic-related restrictions have upset our habits. The recent crisis has changed many aspects of our lives, including the less ordinary ones, such as holidays. This sector is still struggling. With the summer holidays approaching, it is time to make some assessments.
The question arises as to what will happen to tourism after the lockdown. At the end of the pandemic, will people want and, above all, be able to afford to go on holiday and travel?
Conditions are certainly not the best. Besides many people will still live in fear and mistrust for a long time, it should also be considered that not everyone will be able to enjoy their holidays and have the availability to travel. Entrepreneurs and employees will be struggling to get their economic situation back on track. They may also be relocating to new jobs, if they still have any. However, people feel the desire to leave, embark on adventures and visit new places, even close to home.
Operators in the tourism sector confirm a trend based on proximity stays, in nature and in less frequented places, but above all within the national borders for the coming months of 2021. TripAdvisor reports that only 30% of travelers are willing to take a plane and 5% plan to travel on intercontinental routes.
Therefore, people will spend holidays in the name of health and personal safety. This will set the trend of future tourist flows. The dominant trend is moving towards destinations close to home or reachable by car in a few hours, in less known and frequented places. This global trend is present both domestically and abroad.
Why plan today if you do not know what will happen tomorrow? This question arises from the uncertainty created by the pandemic. Closely related to traveler confidence, last-minute booking represents the optimal solution lately. In countries like Italy and the UK, the average tourist will not be so confident about booking in advance, for the next few months.
A further factor must be considered. The progress of the global vaccination campaign is expected to influence the trend in travel and accommodation prices.
Then what will happen in the coming months? As long as contagion stops, offers on online travel agencies, such as Booking, will normally increase again and stabilize. As evidenced lately by the low number of reservations, experts believe that the travel industry will return to pre-pandemic levels only when all people worldwide are vaccinated. In the most optimistic forecasts, air traffic will return to the levels of last year in 2024.
In summary, the travel trend for this summer includes:
- destinations within a few hours of home
- natural environments far from the crowded areas of cities
- last minute “improvised” trips
- accommodation in facilities meeting health standards
